Bill C-39, Building Canada Strong Act, poses serious risks to the environment protections, Indigenous rights and Human Rights broadly. This move by the Federal Government under the current leadership of Mark Carney is yet another attack on the rights of Indigenous peoples cloaked in the Language of mutual respect and honesty. If this were the case this government would respect the law and meet the minimum standard of free, prior and informed consent (as per the UN Declaration) before moving forward with any projects that would affect Indigenous peoples rights.
Indigenous peoples are most at risk of immediate physical and environment violence because of resource projects. This was a major point in the Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+.
Canada and Canadians are facing many challenges and problems due to the crushing forces of capital and financial imperialism. Making Environmental protections and Indigenous rights expendable for the sake of capitalist expansionism will not solve these issues. Mr. Carney has no desire to solve issues for working class Canadians or Indigenous peoples because this is not in his class interests.
Canadians need real working class power in society if they are to meet their obligations to domestic and international law and build real and meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Canada cannot have Human Rights at the Expense of Indigenous Rights.
