11 Ways for Canada to End its Support for Apartheid Israel's Genocide in Gaza
by Yves Engler - Canada’s recent vote for a ceasefire at the UN lessens this country’s complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza. But this small victory for popular mobilization was quickly undermined by the government joining the US-led Red Sea shipping coalition and is far overshadowed by Canada’s innumerable forms of support for Israel.
With its unspeakable horrors in Gaza Israel has stirred the most sustained antiwar and internationalist mobilization since the (Canadian backed) US war in Vietnam. Last weekend protests took place in 30 cities with over 3,000 marching in Montréal in the eleventh weekend in a row of mass protests. The popular uprising pressured the Trudeau government to shift its usual stance and vote against the US/Israel position at the UN.
Below are 11 demands that would lessen Canadian complicity with Israeli violence and colonialism:
The ABC of Materialist Dialectics
by Leon Trotsky - December 15th, 1939
The ABC of Materialist Dialectics
Dialectic is neither fiction nor mysticism, but a science of the forms of our thinking insofar as it is not limited to the daily problems of life but attempts to arrive at an understanding of more complicated and drawn-out processes. The dialectic and formal logic bear a relationship similar to that between higher and lower mathematics.
Argentina: Building The General Strike Against the Milei Government
By Fredy Lizarrague, Left Voice, January 9, 2024 - Defeating The Milei Government’s Reactionary Agenda Will Require Independent Working-Class Organization In Argentina.
Editor’s note: This article is based on a summary of several articles from La Izquierda Diario, the Argentinian sister newspaper of Left Voice. They are the result of collective elaborations by the national leadership of the Partido de Trabajadores Socialistas (“Party of Socialist Workers,” PTS), which were published here, here, and here, among others.
Full Text: The statement by the Republic of South Africa to the International Court of Justice
We are publishing the 84 page statement by the Republic of South Africa to the International Court of Justice so that everyone can see the clarity and completeness of the case against Israel concerning genocide. It will remain on Red Review website as a reference for everyone.
South Africa alone has stepped forward. No other state has braved the intense threats of the US imperialists and the Israeli Zionist fascists to declare before the world what they already know and are afraid to say. Bravo to South Africa for this action.
Editorial: Defend the Mass Movement Against Zionist Genocide
The American ruling class appears united in its attack on free speech and academic freedom on US campuses. Presidents at University of Pennsylvania, Stanford and Harvard have been forced to resign on charges that they were not sufficiently vigorous in opposition to the Hamas raid on October 7. Nor did they denounce and curtail the constitutional rights of students and staff opposing Zionist genocide. Unless you cry out in support of racist Israeli genocide against Palestinians, you are denounced as “anti Semitic”, or even un-American.
Naomi Klein’s “Doppelganger” – Dystopia Without an Exit Strategy
A book review by Barry Weisleder - Naomi Klein, a social democrat in Canada who claims to be anti-capitalist, complains obsessively that she is often being confused with Naomi Wolf, a former liberal feminist who has joined the populist, pro-Trump right wing.
So what, you say?
For the rejection of agreement between the CAQ and union bureaucracies
by Marc Bonhomme - You have to listen to the Midi-Info interview (15/01/24, 12:43) of Radio-Canada with a teacher from Montreal’s Saint-Michel district to understand why she and, in her words, her colleagues at her school, following a meeting to feel each other’s pulse, are leaning towards rejecting the FAE’s tentative agreement unless they accept it “out of desperation”, as she puts it. The salary negotiated is not commensurate with their university training and responsibility, she adds. She could have pointed out that while it may compensate for inflation – the compensatory formula for the last three years is locked in at just 1% more – including the delayed 2022 increase, there will be nothing to catch up. The worsening climate crisis and, no doubt, wars do not augur well for inflation control. And we’re still a long way from matching the overall remuneration of employees in other public sectors, which at the outset was almost 23% higher. voice.
It was correct to oppose invocation of the Emergencies Act
by Barry Weisleder - The recent ruling of a federal judge against the use of the Emergencies Act in 2022 employs a fundamentally different rationale than that of socialists who opposed the EA. But the latest news reminds us that socialists were correct to oppose the draconian powers, then and always, when imposed by the capitalist state. This is what the 2022 Socialist Action Political Resolution says on the matter of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's invocation of the Emergencies Act, backed by the NDP.
No To US/UN Occupation of Haiti!
By Marty Goodman, August 4, 2023 - US imperialism now has a willing partner in yet another imperialist contemplated occupation of Haiti. On July 29, Kenya’s Foreign Minister Alfred Mutua volunteered to do Washington’s dirty work in Haiti. He promised to lead an armed intervention with 1,000 Kenyan police officers. On July 14, the United Nations Security Council (Resolution 2692) gave UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres 30 days to submit a report that would include a plan for a multi-national police force in Haiti to assist and train Haitian police in combatting an epidemic of gang violence which has engulfed 80 percent of its capital, Port au Prince. The UN decision to impose a “sanctions regime” was originally made last October (Resolution 2653) at the prompting of the Biden administration and the de facto Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry, widely viewed in Haiti as a US stooge, and the UN Secretary General Guterres.
